An international conference titled “Green Energy Policies and Economic Sustainability” was held on April 7, 2025, in Jeju. The event brought together government officials, energy policy experts, and researchers from eight countries—Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Cameroon, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, Ethiopia, and Botswana—to share strategies and challenges in achieving sustainable energy transitions.

The conference was divided into two sessions, each focusing on key aspects of the global energy transition.

Session 1: Green Hydrogen and Global Markets

Moderated by Professor Chung Mo Koo from CTBC Business School (Taiwan), this session highlighted the role of green hydrogen as a transformative energy source.

  • Sri Lanka presented its ambitious goals to achieve 70% renewable energy by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050, while addressing challenges such as high production costs and regulatory gaps.

  • Kazakhstan introduced its large-scale hydrogen initiatives, including the Svevind and HyrasiaOne projects, aiming to become a major hydrogen exporter despite infrastructure and water resource limitations.

  • Cameroon emphasized green hydrogen as a pillar of national energy strategy, focusing on the need for regulatory systems, R&D, and international financing.

  • Vietnam showcased its roadmap to decarbonize industry and enhance hydrogen production through international partnerships and legal reforms.

Professor Boo Yun Cho (Jeju National University) served as discussant, offering comparative insights and encouraging multilateral cooperation for overcoming shared barriers.

Session 2: Green Energy Policies and Sustainability

Chaired by Professor Sung Jin Kang, the second session examined broader policy frameworks supporting green growth.

  • Indonesia discussed its carbon trading mechanisms and clean energy funding needs to meet its 2060 net-zero target.

  • Myanmar presented renewable energy plans aimed at full electrification by 2030, while noting challenges related to political stability and financial investment.

  • Ethiopia detailed strategies to leverage its abundant hydropower, solar, wind, and geothermal resources, stressing the importance of international financing and public-private partnerships.

  • Sri Lanka returned with a presentation on cross-sector decarbonization to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

  • Botswana addressed governance and stakeholder fragmentation in its solar energy sector, proposing network-based models for collaboration.

Professor Kyung Nam Kim (Korea University) led the discussion, emphasizing that stakeholder engagement, policy alignment, and capacity building are essential for scalable and inclusive energy transitions.

The conference underscored the global urgency of green energy transformation and the value of international collaboration. As emerging economies chart their own sustainable pathways, such forums foster mutual learning and policy innovation, further solidifying Jeju’s reputation as a hub for environmental dialogue.
