2021 Philippines-Korea Energy Storage System Expert Forum

 

 

 

 

Date: November 3rd, 2021.

- Participants: approx 64 experts from academia (including current GETPPP students), government officials and private firms from the Philippines and Korea.

 

Session 1: Presentation by the Philippines and Korea experts

 

- Redentor E. Delola, Assistant Secretary, Electric Power Industry Management Bureau, Department of Energy of the Philippines: “ESS Policy, Regulation and Market Prospect in the Philippines Adoption of Energy Storage System in the Electric Power Industry”

- Yutack Kim, Director, K-BIA, “ESS Technology R&D Trend”

- Mylene Capongcol, Director, Renewable Energy Department Bureau, Department of Energy of the Philippines: “A Guide for Renewable Energy and ESS Investors with Reference Cases for Successful Investment”

- Inseong Kim, Manager, Hanwha Energy: “National and International ESS Businesses”

  

Session 2: Q&A with Prof. Yoon Hee Ha, Professor and Project Leader, Graduate School of Energy and Environment (Green School), Korea University

 

  Due to the pandemic situation, all speakers and participants joined the Forum online via Zoom. Officials from the Philippines Department of Energy and the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy as well as the Dean of the Graduate School of Energy and Environment (Green School) from the Korea University opened the event with welcoming words to all participants, emphasizing the importance of a collaboration in the energy sector between the Philippines and the Republic of Korea in order to promote sustainable green energy together.

 

  The first speaker, Assistant Secretary from the Philippines Department of Energy Mr Delola started by disclosing relevant policies related to ESS, such as the Philippines Power Development Plan or the Smart Grid Roadmap. He also introduced BESS Projects, of which 71 have been committed with 2110 MW capacity, as of June 2021.

 

​  The Director of the K-BIA, Yutack Kim, then talked about ESS as optimal solution for smart grids and demand response. He also showed that Lithium-Ion Batteries have the overall best performance among current ESS technologies and mentioned the importance of providing second-life options for EV batteries.

 

​  Director Mylene Capongcol of the Renewable Energy Department Bureau explained in more detail the 4 programmes that the Philippines are rolling out in order to reach their target of 35% share of renewable energy by 2030; and shared some fast facts for interested investors into renewable energy development.

 

  Finally, Inseong Kim, Manager at Hanwha Energy, presented a case study of a partnership with an Irish company in order to illustrate important aspects for attracting foreign investment into the energy market.

 

  In the following Q&A Session, participants had the chance to discuss issues that were raised during the presentations, such as the role of ESS in the Korean power system and the role of the privatised energy industry in the Philippines.
