Due to the pandemic situation, all speakers and participants joined the Forum online via Zoom. Government officials from the participating countries as well as the Dean of the Graduate School of Energy and Environment (Green School) from the Korea University opened the event with welcoming words, emphasising the threatening impacts of climate change and the consequent importance to ensure the sustainability of the energy sector utilising the cooperation between Indonesia, Vietnam and the Republic of Korea.

Tony Susandy, a Senior Policy Analyst on New and Renewable Energy, started off the event with an overview of targets and strategies by Indonesia in order reduce emissions: By 2060, Indonesia aims to support 100% of its electricity system with NRE, to which BESS shall contribute ~140 GW, requiring investments of about 25 million USD per year.

The Environmental Specialist of the Climate Change Department in Vietnam shared Vietnam’s policies, incentives and standards for EVs and ESS and lists some factors that should be considered in the local RE and ESS market. He also mentions that the domestic enterprise VinFast is becoming a large player in the market, partnering with other companies such as LG Chem from South Korea.

The Executive Vice President Zainal Arifin from PT PLN, the state-owned electricity company, shares the five uses of ESS in Indonesia, which includes intermittent power generation or load shifting applications. He also shares some figures of the estimated ESS market size and the RE development plan up until 2030.

The next presenter, Ngyuen Phu Hien, a founding member of the Vietnam Clean Energy Association Southern Office, talked about the different scales of ESS applications from the consumer perspective. This ranges from small scale applicaton, such as electric motorcycles and household appliances, to medium scale home ESS, to large scale Solar & Wind Integrated ESS projects. He also advises that even though the market is still in its early phase, drastic change will come.

Lastly, the Head of the ESS Business Team at Hyundai Motors, Hee Yeon Ryu, gave a more detailed overview of the 2nd life application of EV batteries, and the necessary technologies and processes that are involved, such as the Collection, Grading and Testing of the Batteries, and the follwoing new ESS Design and its maintenance. He emphasises the importance of a Grading System for used Batteries in order to ensure its functionality and safety.

After the presentations, the participants were given some time with the speakers to follow-up and ask more in-depth questions. These included a wide range of topics, such as the role of international companies in each countries ESS policies, the policy-making progress for standards and incentives, 2nd life battery policies and applications as well as other forms of ESS, such as hydrogen or hydropump storage.
